The Arch, Riverfront & City
St. Louis, Missouri
St. Louis' history is still evident on its riverfront, with barges on the Mississippi and Eads Bridge overhead. Eads Bridge, built in 1874, was the first steel truss bridge in the world, and is a National Historic Landmark. The Gateway Arch (as in "gateway to the west" in the early days of the U.S.) was completed in 1965, a soaring monument designed by Eero Saarinen.
